These ideas are designed to help students at any level learn English faster and more efficiently by using free tools online and around the house.

Learning English can be a daunting task, to say the least. For the serious student, ESL classes are a good but expensive option. As a supplement, or even just as a way to start learning, here are a few free ways to learn English.

Free Online Courses

The first thing to realize is no single "free" Internet ESL course will lead to English fluency. However, several free lessons can provide helpful tidbits of knowledge that can really add up.

In the end, many free lessons are only advertising. For any good, quality online class, payment will be required. But the free quizzes and activities available can be useful to a struggling student. To start, try these lessons at Learn-English-online.

For students preparing for the TESL/TEFL exams, several websites offer free practice tests.

Mix it Up: Variety is Important When Learning English

This goes for listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Practice reading a variety of English resources, like websites, newspapers, short stories, and magazines. Join a forum for ESL teachers and students (usingenglish.com is a great one to start with) and jump in on the discussion. Forums like these are filled with helpful and knowledgeable English speakers willing to help at no cost!

For the brave ESL student ready to start conversational English, Skype Public Chat is a must. These forums include live chat (free via Skype) with other English speakers, native and non-native, from around the world. This is a fantastic way to start participating in real conversations with little pressure, and also guarantees practice with dozens of different dialects and accents.

Podcasts are a great free resource for English listening practice. Hundreds of websites offer podcasts on various topics, so the student can find something interesting based on their level. Culips.com has great podcasts for ESL students that include transcripts and quizzes as well.

English Everywhere!

The serious English student should surround him/herself with the language as much as possible. Total immersion is obviously the most ideal situation, but if that isn't possible, immersion at home is an option.

In most countries, English materials are available. American and British sitcoms and shows can be found on television overseas, as well as movies. DVD's with English subtitles can be a helpful and fun way to study. Students can seek out newspapers, magazines, and books in English.

Money spent on ESL courses are usually a worthwhile investment, but these ideas can help the English student in learning their new language.

For the ESL teacher looking for classroom supplements, try these free activities for ESL students. Own an iPhone or iPod Touch? These Apps for ESL Students provide everything from quizzes and flashcards to games and interactive activities!
